I wish “Letter from Santa Claus” was a thing when I was a kid. But I tell myself, “That’s okay! Now that you’re a Mom, you can have that for your kid!” And it all makes sense.
Seeing my kiddo happy means the world to me. Getting her excited about something makes me put in everything in my power to make her wishes come true. And she’s always excited for Christmas! I mean, who’s not? And although it’s very different this year for our family not only because of the pandemic but also because of my husband’s deployment, I still want to give her the Christmas that every kid dreams of.
And it doesn’t mean fancy gifts, expensive toys, or lavish outfits or shoes, it’s as simple as taking her to buy our gingerbread kit, driving around to see Christmas lights or décor in the neighborhood, and hanging her stockings for Santa — which holds her letter to Santa.
We might have a debate on this but I believe in Santa. I believe in Santa not as a person but as a symbol. Santa Claus, for me, is a symbol of giving, Christmas spirit, family love, and okay, secretly buying and wrapping and placing your child’s present in the stocking. Ha-ha!
And I had an idea when she was three (back when she was starting to read) to write a letter from Santa Claus for her. It just came to me and I immediately got my laptop, started typing, and printed it out. Placed it inside an envelope and voila, that was her letter from Santa Claus. I secretly stashed it inside her stocking. And the next morning, to my surprise, she woke me and her Dad and started reading the letter from Santa Claus. She almost forgot about the present. She was so giddy and thrilled! And that very moment– her face with excitement and pride, that melted (and still melts) my heart. I am also overjoyed.
It was very simple. I just wrote her a letter saying it’s Santa and she’s been good this year. And I paid her a visit last night. That was the letter. Black and white. Simple. But made a huge impact!
