1. Before You Buy Curtains
This may come as a shocker to some. But even before you start looking into curtains in the store or online, you have to do this first. You have to decide what look you’re going for. Are you going for boho? Velvet? Do you need blackouts or sheers?
You might ask, why do we need to do this first? It’s simple. Curtain shopping is overwhelming! You might get lost in thousands of options and you want to make sure that what you landed on fits. Not only to avoid delays and returns but also to save your time and energy.
So, after you have decided on the look and feel you’re aiming for, take initial measurements. Measure how tall your windows are and measure from floor to ceiling.
Curtain Length
Start by measuring the window.
Curtains come in different lengths, ranging from less than 63″ to more than 120″. To make a room feel taller, you can hang curtains anywhere between 6″ – 12″ above the window frame. Extending the rod 3-6 inches beyond both sides of the frame makes a window look wider. And it allows more light to shine through.
Shorter curtains lend a more casual feel, while longer curtains are a more elegant choice.
Now that you know the measurements, here comes the fun part – curtain shopping! And we can find out how to hang curtains.

2. Gather the materials.
Gather up everything you need on how to hang curtains, including:
- Curtains
- Curtain rod and hardware
- Ladder
- Tape measure
- Pencil
- Level
- Drill and drill bit
- Safety glasses
- Stud finder
- Wall anchors (if needed)
- Iron or Steamer
3. Take measurements.
Measure your windows to make sure you get the correct curtains and rods. To determine the length of the rod, measure the width of your window and add eight to twelve inches. Each curtain panel should be at least as wide as your window.
4. Install the brackets.
How to hang curtains? Use a pencil to mark the drill holes for your brackets. Take your tape measure and mark 2″ out from the top left and right corners of the window sill. Then measure up from these marks 4″ – 6″. This is where the brackets will be installed. Use a level to make sure the bracket is even.
And use your stud finder to see if the bracket location is on top of a wall stud. If your marks line up on studs, use a screwdriver or you can drill to screw in the brackets. If your marks do not sit on a stud, you should install wall anchors so the wall can support the weight of your curtains. To do this, drill a pilot hole and then install the anchor first.
5. Install the curtain rod and curtains.
If your curtains are straight out of the package, iron or steam out creases and wrinkles.
Depending on your bracket type, you will either have to screw the rod to the brackets or place the rod into the hooks. If your curtain rod comes with finials (decorative end pieces), twist or pull them from the ends of the rod. And then thread the rod through the curtain’s pocket or grommet. If your curtain requires rings or hooks, secure them to the curtain’s fabric along the top. Your bracket may have set screws to keep the rod in place, so you’ll want to tighten them once the rod is installed.

HOW TO HANG CURTAINS TIPS:
– Wash and dry the curtains before hanging.
You’ll definitely want to wash and dry your curtains before hanging them. This is in case there is any shrinkage. It pays to wash them first and make sure it’s still the proper length compared to finding it out after couple of weeks or months.
– Use enough fabric.
You want your curtains to feel full and not skimpy. If you actually plan to close your curtains on occasion, the curtains should be roughly between two and 2.5 times the width of the actual window.
– Use curtain accessories.
Decorative rods, finials, holdbacks and ties are curtain accessories that can add details and texture to the room. They are like the jewelry of a room.
– Hang the curtains high.
This will immediately create the illusion of more ceiling height.
– Make sure you have all the tools before you begin.
